Unit 9- Social Issues
What makes a documentary a documentary?
Documentary is something where you can show a certain perspective on a topic of interest. It's where people can express an opinion or even send a message to others.
A documentary is constructed by the three-act structure, which is based on a beginning, a middle and an end.
The events that often happen in a documentary are the interviews, where people who were present or know about the topic of the documentary will tell their experience to the audience. Facts where will tell the story of what has happened, and different perspectives.
Can you think of any Social issue documentary that you have seen?
' Seaspiracy ' directed by Ali Tabrizi. It is documentary where talks about the danger that people are putting their life in the sea.
' The Tinder Swindler ' directed by Felicity Morris. It is about a group of women who were given a big amount of money to the same guy.
Documentary Conventions:
Defines the different sub-genres of documentary:
- Docudrama/Historical: film where shows historical events that has happened. They are made in a dramatic way to show a certain perspective to the audience.
- Biographical/Autobiographic: a film based on someone's life. Some parts may be changed (fictional) however the whole of the film is based on real facts.
- Nature/Science: film based on animals, plants, insects and anything that is not human based. They are normally taken in their natural ecosystem.
- Ethnographic: historical film where it is usually shot with non-Western people. And sometimes associated with anthropology (what make us humans).
- Travel: film showing people travel though the world. And it's not for commercial purposes.
- Advocacy/Crime: film usually involves police and law.
- Rockumentary: Film Representing Musicians Life. It shows old concerts and performances of the person/band.
Defines the different modes of documentary:
- Poetic Mode is to create a certain mode or tone to the documentary. This is show by using images and songs to build a certain feeling on the audience. In poetic mode documentaries, voice overs, narrative and direct audience interaction are largely absent from the traditional narrative structure, since they focus more on the visual appeal.
- Performative Mode emphasizes the filmmaker's engagement with the subject.
- Reflective Mode makes the audience aware of the filmmaker process rather than the interaction between the filmmaker and the subject .
- Expository Mode focus on a more specific view. As the filmmaker gathers evidence that is strong and well supported while remaining hidden behind the cameras. This mode makes the narrator speak more often with the audience which builds a relationship between the narrator and the viewer.
- Observational Mode is a type of documentary where it aims to capture the everyday life without a script. This mode is usually used on natural documentaries as the camera man only stays hidden and film what is happening in nature. And it is used more daily lives sounds. The mode creates a scenario that makes it easier for the audience to feel like they are in the situation that is being shown.
- Participatory Mode emphasizes the interaction between filmmaker and subject. Usually, it involves the filmmaker appearing in front of the camera without any subject in order to create the more personal feel in the documentary. louis theroux

Elements of an Identity:
Purpose of identity is to express who you are or who you want to be. To other people to identify who you are as a person. The purpose of the identity for a brand is for people to associate their name/logo to what they work with. A brand can be identified by using a specific typographic, their logo or even color theme, and that can help the brand to mirror who they are and what the company work is.
Elements of an identity can be obvious things such as age, gender, beliefs, motivations and ethnicity. However, the three identities to identify an individual are the personal identity, family identity and social identity which is based on their moral beliefs and self values that they learn through their lives.
For a brand their identity is based on the use of typography, color and shapes/lines. An example that can be seem the basics is on Amazon brand. Their brand use a sans serif workshop sans bold, the color blue, white and orange are used on the logo and on their platforms as well, and their logo was created by using simple lines to create a smile.
The use of identities in campaigning is one of the most important parts of a campaign as this will make the campaign stand out on the market from other competitors. Having a memorable identity for a campaign's target audience is important as this will make people be influenced by the campaign. It will also encourage people to share the campaign with family and friends, making the campaign gain more audience.

Experimental Jetset:
A trio of designers based on Amsterdam introduced in 1997 the Experimental Jetsets. The trio are Danny Van Del Dungen, Marieke Stolk and Erwin Brinkers. Their small graphic design group make from printed matter to installations, using their unique style. The group view the work of a way of self expression where they can play with different types of design and they describe their method as "turning language into objects".
Experimental Jetset is known for using 'Helvetica' typeface a lot on their work. The use of Helvetica is a start point on their work as when they start the group typefaces were beginning to proliferate around the globe.

| Final poster only using typography |
On this poster I created by not only using typography but also with a drawing on it. Creating this poster was a good recap on how to use Adobe Illustrator. This gave me the opportunity to get more skills to create my final poster for this project.
I had to outline a turtle that I got from google and then add as a pattern to add all over the page. Then I added the text 'help save the ocean' since the topic I was addressing is problems with the ocean. On the background I created a pattern of tones of blue to represent the ocean as I thought it would make more clear what the poster is about.
On my second poster, I created only using typefaces as that may help me in the future if I don't have time to take my own imagery. Also, using only types is a good way to show how good I am on using only sans serif typeface. I used the same text I used on the previews posters as both posters are about the same topic. Furthermore, I added one more phrase on the corners of the posters saying 'There are tons of plastic on the ocean, and if we do nothing to stop, it may be late to save it.' I also added a dark blue color for the background as I thought dark blue would suit well with the text and the topic.

Constructivists:
Constructivism emerged in 1913 by Vladimir Tatlin and Alexander Rodchenko in Russia. This movement aimed to return art to its material foundations. Artists use different types of forms to express such as in posters, architecture and sculptures. It is used cubism and futurism movement and avant-garde where they have used element form on the constructivist movement. Artists use those elements to form a strong message to their audience by using geometric shapes and bold typefaces.
In 1922, Lyubov Popova designed a poster with a model of stage set for The Magnanimous Cuckhold in the Meyerhold Theater in Moscow.

Constructivists Poster:
We were asked to create a constructivism poster with a social issue as the topic to experiment with illustrator. The poster I've created is to show animal needs. I picked animal needs as my topic because animals should be able to stretch every part of their body and have enough space to jump, play and run.
I have represented it with geometric shapes and simple drawing of some animal paws. I used red because it represents blood and deaf, and purple because it represents power to the animals. Using Adobe illustrator, I created triangles around the A4 paper, using the pen tool as I thought it would be easier to create the shapes.
I didn't like this poster as it looks messy and it doesn't give the message right away for the audience. Also, I wish I did something that would have more impact and be more obviously of what the topic is. However, it was fun to experiment producing a poster with the concept of constructivism.
Furthermore, I created a second poster using constructivism movement with a social issue as the topic. For this one, my topic was about abortion and women's rights to decide what they want to do with their body.
To create this poster, I first choose the colors that I was going to add in. I choose black because it would give a sense of power from women and what we all go thought, gray because it would give a balance look as it can also means right for all. And pink because it gives a sense of feminism and urgency about the topic of matter.
Next, I picked an image from google of a pregnant women where I outlined and made it a shadow so it doesn't look like the image was just copied. After, I drew a fist using the pen tool, which I thought would give a strong women's right feeling. I also choose the phrase 'Mind your own uterus!' to add on the top of the poster. With the phrase, I wanted to give a strong and quick message where people would understand it. I added the first and last world inside a rectangle to make it stand out.
I enjoyed doing this poster since it is a topic where it had a direct impact on me and it was a way to express myself. However, it's not clear on what issue I am talking about, so my teacher suggested that I add a small sentence telling 'our body, our rights on the corner of the poster.

B-roll task:
What is B-roll and what is used for?
In a movie or documentary, a B-roll is supplemental video that cuts in and out of the primary interview material. And it is used to make films because it gives the audience additional information. If the narrative doesn't work the b-roll that is the visual work will still give the audience the message.

Surrealism:
Surrealism is a movement where artists create something bizarre but understandable. This movement started with the idea of freeing the mind, free to expression and political freedom.
Some important artists in surrealism are Salvador Dalí, Jan Svankmajer and Roman Cieslewicz.
Surrealism is used in campaigns to shock and provoke the audience so they remember the campaign information.
Michal Batory is a graphist who specializes in making posters. Born in 1959, Poland, Michal studied in Paris, doing graphic design. And at the end of his studies he decided to work with poster designs as a professional.
Michal create his posters by combining various objects together to create a new, aesthetic and unusual objects that will make his viewers question the poster.
"Je suis Charlie" is a slogan created to support the freedom of speech. The slogan was created by a man called Charlie which his work is to create cartoons for the magazine. Charlie posted on Twitter that phrase while the terrorist violence was happening.
Michael created this poster with the idea to honor his individual artists.

Surrealist Poster:
I used planets and some marine animals as I think it's a good representation of a new world where there's no limit. Since in reality marine animals can't live in the galaxy. And I put a man reading while sitting in our planet as an idea that even the simple act of reading frequently may help people to be more open minded.

Interviews and Vox-Props:
Doing this practice before the final piece helped me know what I can improve when making my documentary. Some of the people who were interviewed were on studio which looked more professional and the sound was better. While the other, I interviewed them around college where it picked background noice making it harder to understand what the person is saying. Iinterviewed some young people around college to know what the young generation knows about my choose topic. After, filming all the interviews I edited them all together using Adobe Premiere Pro. I put the questions up on the video as I thought it would be easier to understand the answers. Then, I exported on YouTube since it's an easier way to shake the work.

Composition in Photography:
Rule of Third is basic horizontal and vertical lines in the image where the composition is position in the photography.
Leading Lines are lines inside the photography that has been positioned and framed to drag attention to a specific place in the photo.
Patterning/Symmetry are a type of photography where it is usually made of shapes, lines and colors being repeated.
Framing photography is where you find what to include as a natural frame and what to leave out of it. It is to create a composition so the viewer's attention is inside the frame.
Depth of Field is how much of the photography is on focus.
Viewpoint is the position that it's taken the picture. Depending on the perspective that the photographer took, it can dramatically change the view's perspective.
Bird's Eye View photography is when the camera is positioned directly above the subject.
Worm's Eye View is the opposite of Bird's Eye View. I's where you take the photo from the lower angle of the subject.

Planning/Schedule for documentary and poster:
Before starting my final outcomes, I created this schedule so I can have an idea of what I am suppose to be doing every week until the last week of production. This will help me be more organized during this project and keep me remembering every step I need to do to finish this project successfully. Also, I won't miss my deadline and reduce the risk of not having enough time to finish everything on time.
After creating my schedule I got the opportunity to identify some goals for this project. My first goal is to add my own imagery as much as possible to my documentary. And the second goal is to be sure to finish everything on time as I tend to take longer to finish producing a documentary as I don't enjoy and I am not good editing videos.

Documentary Research:
Seaspiracy documentary notes:
- How much of the ocean have been explored?
- S how news of what is happening, twitters, social media etc.
National Geographic: pregnant whale died with 50 pounds of plastic in her stomach
Global Citizen: Baby dolphin found dead with stomach full of plastic trash
Vox: The alarming trend of beached whales filled with plastic
National Geographic: 337 whales beached in largest stranding ever
-A side of the story where didn't know. A story of how huge our impact on the seas had become.
- Problems in the sea: plastic, over fishing (fishing vessels kill more), bycatch
- Marine Parks: how did the animals got there, do you know that they were forced? -is connected to industries like whaling
-pest control
-ecosystem: without sharks the world's oceans would be ruined and the earth would die
-show the average of people being killed by sharks and sharks being killed by people
look up- The New York times: Japan resumes commercial whaling
-MSC not to trust, labels often obscure what's really happening at sea.
-Dolphin safe program does not guarantee the safety of sea animals.
-#plasticstraw, #DeadWhale #Sustainable
- Plastic Pollution coalition and Earth Island Institute are connected to Dolphin safe labor where it is helping to continue with the fishing.
- fish carbon stabilize our climate
-To save the sea, live it alone
- there'a not thing as sustainable fishing
-Sierra Club: it didn't want to want to come out against hunting, fishing, meat-eating. They thought they would lose membership support if they did. Most groups are not interested in solving the problem but interested in exploiting the problem. It's a fell-good business
-people who are monitoring fishing activity on ships were being killed or receiving death threats so they didn't tell the truth.
-Local businesses can't compete with the economic might of the Europe Union. It's just a continuation of a history of plundering the African continent. Meaning that these fishing operations weren't only wi[ing out the fish but also destroying the economies
-fish farming not good. it has infestation of sea lice parasites, a common reality of fish farming across the world.
-38% of mangrove has been destroyed by shrimp and prawn farming. Thailand still have slave labor
-grind
- There is hope here because marine ecosystems bounce back so quickly if they're allowed to. This is within our grasp. We can do it.
-the life in the seas can only happen if very large areas of sea are close to commercial fishing.
Why aren't the government taking action?
- It starts with someone. Add "one". And no one can do everything, but every one can do something. And sometimes, big ideas make a big difference. That's what we can do. That's what you can do right now. Look in the mirror, figure it out. Go for it. (Dr. Sylvia Earle, marine biologist, oceanographer, explorer)
David Attenborough- A Live on Our Planet documentary notes:
- Loss of our planet's wild places. Biodiversity.
- Human kind rely entirely on this finely tuned life-support machine.
- The documentary was created to witness statement and a vision of the future. A story of how we came to make this our greatest mistake and now, if we act now, we can yet put it right.
- A mass extinction has happened five times in life's four billion year history. The last time was the wind that brought the end of the age of the dinosaurs.
- 75% of all species were wiped out, but it rebuild to our time.
- Some calls it the holocene. the temperature has not wavered up or down by more than 1 degree celsius. And that's because of the rich and thriving living world around us that had been the key to this stability.
- Phytoplankton and immense forests have helped to balance the atmosphere by locking away carbon.
- A tribe in New Guinea were hunter-gatherers, and they lived in small numbers. They rarely eat meat, the resources they used naturally renewed themselves. Working with their traditional technology they were living sustainably .
- 1978, start to be noticeable that some species has become harder to find.
- Whales were being slaughtered by fleets of industrial whaling ships in the 1970s.
- We have pursued animals to extinctions many times in our history, but now that it was visible, it was no longer acceptable.
- Anything that we can't do forever is by definition unsustainable.
- The ocean is an unknown world.
- Coral reefs were turning white. The white color is caused by corals expelling algae that live symbiotically within their body. It is skeletons of dead creatures.
- The ocean has long since become unable to adsorb all the excess heat caused by our activities.
- half of the fertile land on earth is now farmland. The non-human world is gone.
-'But it doesn't end there... '
- 'But the longer we leave it, The more difficult it'll be to do something about it.' - IMF Spring Meeting, 2019
- The living world can't operate without a healthy ocean and neither can we.
- Palau is a Pacific Island native reliant on its coral reefs for fish and tourism. When fish stocks began to reduce, the Palauans responded by restricting fishing practices and banning fishing entirely from many areas. Protected fish population soon became so healthy, they spilled over into the areas open to fishing.
-Helping saving the sea will help combat climate change.
- "Ten thousand years ago, as hunter-gatherers, we lived a sustainable life because that was the only option. All these years later, it's once again the only option."
- it's not about saving our planet but saving ourselves.
Background Research:
While doing my research, I focused on these two organisations. One organization is Dolphin Safe where the focus is to add in marine product proving that no dolphin where harm while net fishing tuna. However, it was already proved that it is impossible to be sure that no dolphin is being harm while fishing, for the reason that, there is not always someone checking on the boats, people can't control what the net will catch and bring inside the boat and because the easiest way to catch more fish and get more profit is by using net. For that reason, the organization clearly can not be trusted as it only add the label to get more profit from the company and to make the buyers feel better about buying the product.
The second organization is Marine Stewardship Council, where the focus is to make people believe that they are buying sustainable fishing. Some ways that are more sustainable are by hook, line fishing harpooning and traps, those are more sustainable since it can't catch much at the same time. However, the organization normally work with companies that catch the marine animals by using fishing net where it happens by catch.
The Grind is a tradition that has over 1,000 years in the Faroe Islands, located between Scotland and Iceland. This tradition takes place between July and September where the people hunt Pilot whales to be eaten all year. Pilot whales are from the family of Delphinidae which are a wide family of dolphins that include several big species such as the Pilot whales.
They believe that killing up to 1,000 pilot whales is more sustainable because not a single piece of the whales goes to waste and if you compare to 51 billion fish killed, it seems for them that we would have to kill less marine life to eat and would reduce the killing of other species.
- This is a short video of the cruelty that the Grind's tradition bring to Pilot whales.
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is a nonprofit organization establish in 1977. Their mission is to protect and conserve all marine wildlife from humans. Also, they serve to protect and stop illegal and unreported fishing.
The organization also has some campaigns such as Saving the Vaquita that it's purpose is to save Vaquita a specie from California, Mexico. Saving Marine Wildlife where the focus is more to spot the illegal fishing in the sea around African Coastal waters. And Sea Shepherd Science campaign, focusing to support research around the globe to save and find solution for the future.
Furthermore, I made a quick search on the benefits that seafood brings us and if we need to keep eating to be healthy. And a great deal of websites and nutritionists say the same thing as eating fish is good since they are a great source of many vitamins and minerals that the human body needs to maintain a healthy diet. However, most nutritionist forget that those marine animals so called health, were only health if they were catch natural in the wild before all the pollution and problems that we have in the ocean now a days. Fish is not more health as you can't be sure on how they were living, they have chemical residues that are harmful to our body and now all marine animals have microplastics inside them making it unhealthy for human to eat.

Campaign Identity:
Examples of campaigns/documentary names:
Ideas of name of documentary: B ling Truth, Corrupt of the seas, Dead sea/ocean.
Ideas of name for the campaign: Sealife, Oceanlife, Blue Ocean, StS- Save the seas, Friends of the sea.
question:
Since I was not sure on what name to choose to use on my project, I decided to create a questionnaire based on what names would be better to add as my main name for my documentary and for my campaign. I have sent to family teacher and friends, and as a result they decided that Dead Sea is the name of my documentary. And for my campaign, save the sea is choosing a name. Knowing this, I can continue creating my final outcomes and can now add the names on the right places.
Inspiration designs for campaign logo:
These are my sketches for the campaign logo. I draw some ideas on what I think it would suit the name of my campaign. I got my inspiration to create this logos from Pinterest as it has lots of ideas and examples on logos.
My first idea was to create a logo just by drawing a wave but I thought it was too dull and basic. So I decided to add more elements for those who see the logo have a better understanding on what the campaign is about. I sketch the name of the campaign with a whale and two seabirds. I put the whale and the name of the campaign around the circle line as I think it would be more organized and it would look more like a logo. This was my favorite sketch for my logo as I think it's show clearly what the campaign is about and it won't take much time to design it.

Planning my documentary:
Estimate time of the whole documentary: 20min
Target Audience: 15+
Name of documentary: Dead Sea
First draft of the Storyboard:
Questions for interviews:
1. What impact does pollution have on the sea? A nd what impact does indiscriminate fishing (done without any careful judgment on the sea animals) have on the sea?
2. What's your understanding about sustainable fishing?
3. What do you think is the biggest cause of void in the sea?
4. What do you do to prevent the sea from dying in your everyday life?
5. What do you think we should do to solve the problem?
More planning:
While doing my research on how I will build my script, I found this video on YouTube and I like how he gave a quick explanation on what Seaspiracy talks about. I have decided that I will be creating a 5min documentary based on this video as I think it will give the message I want and it won't get boring to people watch.
DocumentaryScript:
- The oceans are home to up to 80 percent of all life on earth, among which are whales, dolphins and sharks.
- All three fulfill a very important role, when whales and dolphins return to the ocean surface to brief, they excrete feces which fertilizes tiny marine plants in the ocean called phytoplankton.
- And every year phytoplankton absorbs four times the amount of carbon dioxide as the entire amazon rainforest and generates up to 85 percent of all the oxygen in the world so they play a big role in the fight against climate change.
- The number one biggest threat to marine life is overfishing. Overfishing means that too many fish are taken out of the ocean which creates an imbalance that can lead to the loss of other important marine life.
- But there is an even bigger problem related to overfishing and that is bycatch from commercial fishing. it entails all other marine life cut in the fishing nets while trying to catch specific species.
- Sharks, dolphins and whales that are caught as bycatch often get thrown back into the ocean but most of them die before they even hit the water.
- This means that for every fish you eat one or several sharks and dolphins probably died.
- Every year at least a hundred million sharks and dolphins are caught in nets. This way some people buy fish with a sustainable fishing label on it but those label means nothing since there is nobody controlling if the fishing vessels actually operate sustainably.
- Another big threat to specifically sharks is the shark fin soup in China and Japan. Boats catch sharks out of the ocean only to cut their fins while the animal is still alive, and the remaining body gets thrown away in a big trash can or back into the ocean.
- The fins are being transported to restaurants which put the fins in the soup. However shark fins don't have any taste so before adding the fins to the soap, chicken has boiled in the hot water in order to give it a bit of taste so you're actually eating chicken soup with tasteless shark fins in it.
- Why would these they do this, the sad truth is the shark fin soup is purely a status symbol. By eating this soup rich people can show that they're rich because the soup is pricey.
- The other problem the ocean is dealing with is plastic. Almost half of all plastic in the ocean is fishing nets and other fishing gear which is far more dangerous for them than our plastic bags and straws.
- Millions of tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year and marine life gets strangled in it or eaten both leading to death in most cases.
- And the last problem is slavery. There are floating slaughterhouses traveling through the oceans all over the world. It is estimated the trillions of Fisher killed in processed by the fishing industry every year but the industry doesn't just harm fish these boats are also floating prisons and most people don't realize when the majority of fish sold all around Europe, America and Asia comes from fleets with the work as a tricked and sold slaves. Those people are forced to work at sea and if they try to escape they are killed most of these slaves never return to their families.
- The fish they take out of the oceans are sent over to supermarkets and fish monks all over the world and they know this is happening but hide it from their customers because they know that if we really knew how much human and non-human animal suffering was involved, we wouldn't buy it.
- Interviews...
- what can you do to stop this problem? it is something very simple that you can start today, eat less meat and fish as much as you can, and when it comes to the plastic part use as little single-use plastics as possible.
_____________________________________________________________________
Planning my Posters:
I draw some ideas on what my posters can look like. This gave me the opportunity to try and get two main problems we are having and the idea on the posters. Like that the audience will see that it's not only the plastic the problem but how much we are killing just to satisfy own life style.
For my first sketch, I created with the idea to show the audience who the monster is when comes to fishing. I made the fishing net look like a monsters about to kill the shark draw in front of the net to express the idea that the shark is not the monster but the net created by the man. I will also be adding a phrase to the viewers to get the idea of what I want to argue. In the corner of the poster I will be adding the logo I created for my campaign.
Ideas for phrases:
- The real monster is what the human created.
- The biggest threat is fishing net and not sharks.
- The biggest monster is fishing net and not sharks.
- Sharks are as scared of fishing net as we are of sharks.

For my second sketch, I got the inspiration from the poster of the movie 'Jaws' made in 1975. This poster will concentrate more on the plastic problem we are having.
For the title I will be changing to the word 'plastic' and the shark will be created with plastic products. I choose to do this poster with the idea on top of the shark because when people associate sharks, they get scared so I thought it would be a great idea to create a plastic shark to give a double meaning to the poster. This will make the audience to think who is the real monster in the sea. Also, I will be adding my campaign logo on the top corner of the poster.

Analysis of campaign printed item:
Ripple Effect is a campaign created in 1988. Their focus was to help the people from Uganda to feed themselves. From there, the campaign started growing more and more, and now they not only train on nutrition but also gender equality and business skills. Nowadays, the campaign works all around Africa.
The campaign is successful because it is a topic that lots of people are aware of and the way they advertise to the audience using bright colors. Also, the images use inside the leaflet to show what the campaign is fighting for, showing the audience a clear idea of what they may donate to. Additionally, the image on the front page was well used since in the photography are Africa people smiling and showing not only their expression but the product coming out of the campaign. That makes the target audience feel good and will want to help as they will want to donate to make people feel the way the emotion has been portrayed in the photo.

Infographics:
Infographics are quick and clear visuals to represent data and information. It is eye catching to the reader as well as easy to understand and remember what the information is.
Some of the most use types of infographics are comparison, where it's normally slit down the middle vertically or horizontally with one option on each side. This is to make a clearly look on both options. Statistical infographic which is choose when wants to argue using relevant data, it will tell a story though out the layout. And Geographic infographic, It is to visualize location based data or large quantities of data. This type of infographic use map charts and it is better to show different types of data.
The statistics use was geographic which makes the audience more aware on where the problem is happening. And Statistical infographics where was use bar chart to show research on Covid-19 penal though out some countries. All infographics used in it were well organized and all together made a clear visual of what the problem is around the world.
It was used mostly primary colors to create a simple but functional infographics. Every rectangle of information has not only the statistics but also a symbol on the top of every section. This gives the readers a better idea of \u200b\u200bwhat will be talking about each section of information.
Knowing how infographics can help reader to see more clearly what we want to show. I can use in my campaign to show data on how over the years has changed or make a list to be straightforward on the information that I wish to show the reader.

Final Campaign Poster and Documentary:
Campaign Posters:
The purpose of creating this posters were to advertise the campaign I created for this project called 'Save the Sea'. Save the Sea is a campaign created to make people aware of the currently situation we are dealing with the Sea and the environment nowadays. I looked for other campaigns that have the same topic or interest as the one I choose and noticed that they only advocate the idea of 'stop using plastic' and ignore the fact about fishing nets.
Most campaign I analyze and study the focus is to stop the use of plastic but none of them mentioned the fact about fishing marine lifes which is my main topic. The research sources I used to inspire me during this project were for primary research my interviews that was used on my documentary, however, the interviews helped me to understand what my audience knew and their opinion about the topic. And for secondary research I watched two documentaries where I analyzed and made notes while watching them and did a background research on my topic where it helped create my script.
I decided to create a poster because I wanted to work with graphic design as it is a subject I am interested in and it's something I want to study more into it. Also, I thought creating poster would be another great way to express my opinion on the topic of my choice, where I could try and make my target audience have the same worries that I have. And I design the logo for the 'Save the Sea' campaign using Adobe Illustrator. Before adding the final outcome on Adobe, I sketched some ideas on paper. Most of the drawings I used lots of symbols such as whale, sea bird, waves and other types. It was easy to build the final logo as I was already familiar on how to transform an image to an illustration using Adobe Illustrator. Furthermore, I had to create one more poster since I didn't think it would be enough and making another poster I could show a different issue that the sea have.
The purpose I created the posters were so the target audience would be worried about the Sea and they would want to join the campaign and help with the cause. It was also created to advise and inform the audience about the truth that we are dealing now a days. And the purpose of the logo is so the target audience will identify the campaign and will know what the campaign fight for.
Comparing both items, I think the second poster communicate better the idea with my audience. This is due to how I added the phrase in the poster, making it easier for the audience to identify what I want to communicate and because the design looks more appealing to the eyes. In addition, I think my logo communicate well by itself since I didn't only use a whale on my logo which already refer to saving the whales or protecting it. But also adding the name of the campaign made it clear what the logo was created for.
While planning my outcomes, I decided that the message I wanted to give to my audience is to be aware of their action and make changes on their lifestyle to save not only the sea but also us. This message is clearly state in the posters by illustration created to express the problem. My main audience is people aged 15+ with no specific gender or ethnicity. I consider that my main audience since the documentary 'Seaspiracy' where I based my project on, gave the that age range. Being said that, I think the most appeal item for my audience would be the second campaign poster since they are more appealing to the audience with the use of color and the illustration given which is easier to identify its purpose.
I had some problems while creating the campaign. Some of those problems I had are not having enough time to finish everything as I was not only doing one project but 3 units to finish at the same date. And if I could improve I wish to have more time to focus more on the tools and designs where I could experiment more with. Asides that, I think the poster end up great for the amount of time I had to create them.
Documentary:
I created a short documentary aimed at people aged 15+ with no specific gender or ethnicity. I consider that my main audience since the documentary 'Seaspiracy' where I based my project on, gave the that age range. My documentary is based on the topic of Environmental Impact that the deaf of the Sea will bring to our lives. The genre is documentary and the short film looks at the impact on marine life.
Most campaign I analyze and study the focus is to stop the use of plastic but none of them mentioned the fact about fishing marine lifes which is my main topic. The research sources I used to inspire me during this project was for primary my interviews used on the documentary and for secondary research was watch two documentaries where I analyzed and made notes while watching them.
After my research I decided to create a documentary as it was something I was practicing a lot during this project and because it is something I struggle to work and produce so I thought it would be good to try and improve my skills.
For the beginning of my documentary, I decided to made my own animation because I thought it would look more personal and the documentary would have more of my own footages. The animation is not long enough as I run out of time but I think the end result looks great.
While planning my documentary, I decided that the purpose would be too informed and advise the target audience, that's because while doing my interviews I noticed that lots of young people don't know what is happening in secret of the big fishing companies. Unfortunately, as my planned was not well organised and I didn't have much to add on the documentary, I think my documentary doesn't explain well what I wanted to show as I didn't plan well and my script doesn't communicate well the message I wanted to give.
While planning my outcomes, I decided that the message I wanted to give to my audience is to be aware of their action and make changes on their lifestyle to save not only the sea but also us. However, on the documentary the message was not as clear as I thought it would be because I forgot to be more specific while creating the script. On the process of creating the final outcome, I didn't use much of my own footage because I was running out of time and I was struggling to find ideas on how I can create my own footage to add on my documentary as my topic comes with filming complications which is why it's more efficient to get footage from Youtube as I can't go to the sea to take some footage of my own. My own footage are the animation on the beginning, the interviews and the part where it shows cans of tuna.
During this project, I had some difficulties to finish my project. One of the problem was not having enough people to interview for my documentary. I tried to ask around the college to see who was willing to get an interview but most people didn't want to do and those who did were not taking it seriously. Another problem I had was not having enough time to finish everything as I was not only doing one project but 3 units to finish at the same date. Besides, me not knowing how to use Adobe Premiere Pro made it harder for me to finish on time with all the plan I did.
If I was to repeat the process, for my documentary, I would like to know how to use Adobe Premiere Pro more in depth and make a better storyboard as I found it the final outcome disappointed. I wish I had more experience creating documentaries because I didn't know how to start the documentary and what to add as well as I didn't have enough time to produce something with more information.
